Senior software engineer for high-tech & industrial software.

I'm Alex van Vlerken. For more than twenty years I've built software for high-tech products: cloud services, web applications and HMIs in .NET/C#, embedded software close to the hardware, and the integrations that connect it all.

About

I’m a freelance software engineer based in Eindhoven, in the middle of the Brainport high-tech region. I’ve spent my career in the R&D and IT departments of commercial companies, startups and highly regulated organizations in the healthcare and automotive sector.

I’m curious and quick to get up to speed, so I’m productive in a new codebase and domain fast. My focus is always the same: simple, maintainable, high-quality software that serves the client and the end user. I’ve filled roles from all-round developer to tech lead, usually in multidisciplinary Agile teams, and I feel most at home in the .NET/C#/Azure ecosystem.

What I do

01 / .net & cloud

Cloud, web & backend development

Backends, web applications and cloud services in C#/.NET and Azure: ASP.NET Core, Blazor, Angular, REST/OpenAPI, and data pipelines that turn product and machine data into decisions.

02 / embedded

Embedded & device software

Software close to the hardware: embedded devices, HMIs and machine control. From a handheld medical analyzer to industrial printers, including integrations using interfaces such as OPC-UA, gRPC, CAN, ModBus, Ethercat or custom.

03 / teams

Tech lead & team growth

Architecture, code quality, CI/CD and mentoring. As tech lead I help teams ship — and help less-experienced developers grow, so the team gets stronger with every sprint.

Selected work

HMI & machine control for an industrial printer

Bergstein

Development of a HMI and control system for a single-pass industrial printer that prints directly on objects. This is a .NET application working alongside a PLC.

C# / .NETWPFASP.NETBlazorOPC-UAgRPCPLC-STC++

Automated maintenance planning from printer data

Canon Production Printing · Tech lead

Development of a web application and services that automatically reads and analyzes structured logging and counter data from industrial printers, and compiles a maintenance work plan for the service engineers’ back office, turning raw machine data into scheduled, actionable work.

C# / .NETASP.NETAngularJavaREST / OpenAPI

Cross-platform tooling for energy storage systems

Leclanché Energy Storage Solutions · Tech lead

Development of a cross-platform GUI tool for analysis, testing and configuration of advanced energy storage systems. Also improved the development lifecycle of AGV battery systems, including embedded tooling, CI pipelines and automotive-grade (ISO 26262) practices.

Embedded software for a handheld blood analyzer

Philips Handheld Diagnostics / MiniCare

Built embedded software and R&D tooling for the MiniCare I-20, a handheld point-of-care blood analysis device. Software developed under medical-device rigor and behaviour driven development.

How I work

I like being involved in the full software lifecycle, from requirements and architecture to testing, delivery and support. I work Agile by default, start from BDD where it fits, write unit tests as a habit, and set up CI/CD so that changes ship quickly and safely.

I use AI coding agents and assistants in my daily work. Everything they produce goes through the same review, tests and CI as code I write myself. That is what keeps AI a productivity gain instead of a source of technical debt.

Above all, I keep things simple. The best code is code the next developer understands, and the best solution is the one that actually fits the client and the end user.

Let's talk

Looking for a senior .NET developer or tech lead who is equally at home in the cloud and close to the hardware? I’m based in Eindhoven and available for freelance assignments, on-site in the Brainport region or hybrid/remote.
